Someone discuss those ORT books with me...

Discuss:

  1. Why are there so many glasses left abandoned on the ground? Who loses this many pairs of specs?
  2. Who is the janitor from the school in the baseball cap? Why is he always lurking? Why does he appear in different costumes on different adventures? What does he know that we don't know?
  3. What is it with that man looking over Biff and Chip's fence? Can his dog really jump that high?

There's something going on in these books. Can anyone help?

There's one about the seaside with a dog having a poo in the background. Which is accurate if nothing else.

Dogsby, The Rope Swing is one of my favourites!

I really like ORT books, I imagine the author and illustrator have excellent senses of humour. Gran is fabulous.

Whizzz · 24/05/2007 20:23

I also spotted Jeremy Beadle in one of them too. Ds actually brought a ORT book home about the illustrater Alex Brytcha (sp?)

Hulababy · 24/05/2007 20:25

We have just finished Stage three, so yes we know the rope swing one. LOL! Reading stage 3 Sparrows now - just had the last one about Jan getting her finger stuck in the chocolate mahcine.

DD likes the Stage 3 one about the killer whales and dolphin as it reminded her of Florida.

Dogsby · 24/05/2007 21:47

lol at beadle and dagenham

ahundredtimes · 24/05/2007 21:55

You can get him to come to your school? I think we'd die with excitement. I'm going to suggest it.
The Rope Swing is best, we liked that rabbit having a kind of nervous breakdown by the side of the stream.

Will he wear the janitor hat? He'd have to.

He fled the Czech republic as a child you know (I read it in DSs book)

Dogsby · 24/05/2007 22:05

oh god dont tlel me !" flopty and the janitor flee communism is level 16?

Dogsby · 24/05/2007 22:06

look very old thread( smug oldie alert) about him doign a visit

Rusty · 24/05/2007 22:08

We have 3 large (big flip-chart size)pictures by Roderick Hunt at school from when he visited.

Another good artist to visit schools is Nicholas Allen (The Queen's knickers) - he gats the kids to decorate a pair of paper knickers for the Queen - they love it.

John Ryan (Pugwash) was also brilliant, but I'm not sure he visits schools any more - he's well over 80.

Rusty · 24/05/2007 22:09

Meant Alex Brychta of course.....

ahundredtimes · 24/05/2007 22:13

Lol @ janitor fleeing persecution level 16.

You are most useful smug oldie - have read thread. Gosh, it's gripped people for years this hasn't it? Most excited to discover there is such a thing as an ORT website (and that someone actually described themselves as a 'ritual visitor' to it. Goodness. Mind boggles.)

I'm afraid it was before I worked there, ahundredtimes, but I can ask the literacy co-ordinator - I'd guess the school got publicity material. You could try the phone number on this site

ahundredtimes · 24/05/2007 22:28

Thanks Rusty, I'll try it.
How exciting. Am going to take snaps of me and him, laughing and throwing that hat to the ground, and post on here.
