It is today - there was a notice about it at church on Sunday (6:30am service at top of local hill - no I did not go...!)

Bizarre that they get a half day for it though. Is it a Catholic school?

LIZS · 17/05/2007 13:21

Think Ascension is officially today - some areas of Europe have it as a public holiday.

MaureenMLove · 17/05/2007 13:25

Yes, I remember our vicar mentioning that he would be going into our school with someone important today as it was Ascension Day. Sad (and a tad embarrassed) to say I don't actually know what it is. I only go to church for Church Parade with my Rainbows.

we always had ascension day off - we had to go to church in the morning iirc, then rest of the day as hols. no idea if school does it any longer.

fannyannie · 17/05/2007 14:36

yes Ascension day was definitely today - I was up at 6.30am this moring to play for the 7.30 service at church (been there 4 1/2yr and got away with that service until this year) so was up 1 1/2hrs before "life" starts in our household !

But no the local church school (where DS1 goes) doesn't get a half day.........well I hope not or he's sat next door on his own waiting for me LOL.

MaureenMLove · 17/05/2007 16:49

Can anyone tell me what it is all about then? I feel somewhat embarrassed that I don't know.

MaryBS · 17/05/2007 16:52

40 days after rising from the dead (Easter Sunday), Jesus is taken up (ascends) into heaven. So Ascension day always falls on a Thursday, but varies the date from year to year because Easter Sunday varies

Germany has the day off. It's also Father's Day here, for some bizarre reason, which in this part of Germany means men, whether they're fathers or not, going out together early in the morning and getting utterly rat-*rsed.

Thanks Mary! Appreciate that.

Not so bizarre Berolina about Fathers Day. Mothers day is always the 4th Sunday in Lent in the UK. Found that out this year too! I'll be a wizz at this by next year!

berolina · 17/05/2007 17:05

Oh we had Mother's Day last Sunday. (OT, but: Nothing from dh for me, but 'oh, shall I take ds to [MIL's] this afternoon, it's Mother's Day after all' )
