You have to apply from the September before the year they go and get the forms in by December I think. Could be wrong but it's something like that. Then, they tell you after the Easter term whether they've been accepted into your first choice.
You'll to phone your LEA for a form and do it all earlier I think if the school's oversubscribed. They'll give you the right info anyway.

If she will be going to a state school then the current system is to apply before the December in which they are due to start. Your dd is the same age as mine and will probably start in September 2010 (I think?). You will get a form to fill in from Sept 2009 and send it back before December 2009 - unless of course they change the system again!

We have just put DD's down at age 3, we didn't have to, but we went to see the school as we had some time off work. In our authority (Gloucestershire) you need to have your child registered with a school by the end of the November before the school year in which they will start. That triggers the school admissions people to send you the form on which you list your choices (four, I think). With normal state schools, at least, putting a child's name down early doesn't make a blind bit of difference (I had people freaking me out when DD was about the age of yours, saying I needed to 'put her name down' for our popular local school, but a school governor put me right).

The cut-off here is also the November before the school year they will start. So for example Nov 2009 if you wanta Sep 2010 start.

Ask your LEA, or look on the website.

Varies by area - for State schools the application process beigns anythime form the summer of the year before Reception (the academic year they turn 5), with open days and application packs being sent out,the closing date for which can be as early as Septmber/October or as late as Easter , check with LEA. For independent shcoosl you may already be too late for the more popular ones btu don't give up hope as the waiitng list drop out rate can be high. You could start looking at preschool/nurseries for 2 1/2-3 soon but attendance at a particular one will not guarantee your dd a place at a particular school even if it is part of the same site.

Gosh - how confusing!! Thanks for all your replies though. She is a full time private nursery at the moment and I know we can keep her there until she starts proper school. We are still in 2 minds whether to send her to state or private as it all depends on where we are living. We hope to move next year! Thanks again for all your replies and I will speak to my LEA!!
