What a good way to start chess

Was reading an earlier thread about the link with good maths and chess. dd is about a year ahead in maths.
Just last night I was talking to dd (6 next week) about joining the chess club at school ( I have taught her draughs and she loves that) she was keen but I was not so sure.
Two reason, one it's mostly older children go to the club and two it at lunch break and I think shes to young to give up her lunch break for clubs. I did think the thing to do was let her learn at home and if she likes it to then start chess club next term. The only problem is I don't play chess have done in the past but don't remember it now.
Please help, how's a good way to start, any books, cdroms, or websites.

ChessKids here . Go through it with her (so you remember what you've forgotten - it probably isn't as much as you think) and play some games together

There is also a book called Chess for Children which looks good.

A good way to start is with just a King and pawns. Then add in each new piece one at a time, and play a few games with just that piece so that you get an idea of the different moves, and also the different tactics and strategies.

Having said that ds1 learned the rudiments when he was 3, and has played a bit on and off since then. But it was only this year (when he was 9) that he suddenly "got it" and became a chess player rather than someone who could play chess.

I've been thinking for a year or two about sending dd (6)to a chess club but I didn't want to overwhelm her with activities. She has a fair bit on her plate. However, I've recently decided that she just isn't the type for dance/sport and although I think it's important to have some physical activity, I've decided to drop it all and I've been considering trying the chess club. Ours is not related to school and they meet once a week. Seems to consist for the most part of Russian dc for some reason.
