Hi, im confused. Can you leave school after your 18th birthday or do you have to stay until the end of the academic year?

School leaving age is the end of the academic year in which you have your 16th birthday. You must then continue in some form of education or training until your 18th birthday. The vast majority of young people continue until the end of the academic year in which they turn 18 but that is not compulsory. Depending on the form of education or training undertaken, you may not get a qualification unless you complete the academic year.

Thanks. Because some people have said its academic year. My son spoke to childline to get advice and thats what he was told but others have said otherwise

Whoever is saying academic year is wrong. The legislation is clear (Education and Skills Act 2008 S1). It is 18th birthday and can be even earlier if the young person gets a level 3 qualification (2 A-levels or equivalent).
