Going into teaching advice

Hi are there any teachers here with good advice regarding change of careers into teaching? I'm considering joining the Train to Teach program next year and wondering if it is indeed worth it and if the pay is good? Also wondering where a career in teaching will take me? Thanks!

Have a look in the Staff Room forum on here - lots of similar threads.

You can look up teacher pay scales for your local county council. You will start off right at the bottom!

I did school direct teacher training a few years ago, salaried route. Training year was tough, NQT year was the worst year of my life. It’s a bit better now.

Stress levels and pressure in term time are unreal, I do enjoy having all of the holidays with my dcs. Pay is laughable.

I’ve been teaching for 12 years. At its best, it’s still the best job in the world. At its worst, it’s completely soul destroying.

Spend some time in a school and make sure you really understand what the job is (actually teaching children is probably only about 50% of my workload) and that you really want to do it.

Go and have a look at the similar threads. Sorry OP, but the advice from most teachers (including me) will be "Are you crazy? Don't even think of doing it!" Sad

I love my job but equally there are times I hate it! I love being with the children and teaching them but the side line stuff is what can be soul destroying! Spend lots of time in as many different schools as you can across all year groups and get a feel for it! Nothing prepares you for it though until you start your nqt! My pgce was tough but still didn't fully prepare me for what it is like to be in there every day and have sole responsibility!

Whenever there are threads about who loves their job it is filled with teachers. I love my job, would like to do less but I think most people would say that. I laugh every day, don't take observations and the quest to be outstanding that seriously and I think the pay is OK

The advice I gave my DD is to be sure that it is the only job you want to do and then aim for SLT as soon as possible. Sadly, full-time classroom teaching is not sustainable as a long term career option IMO.
