11+ RGS?

Our Ds would like to sit for RGS and has all hopes on going there, we are new to the area having moved down from the Midlands.
DW thinks we should open our options further and sit for other secondaries so I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Where is RGS?

Which one and how old is ds?! If for 2018 entry you may be too late to register.

If you mean Guildford I would definitely have some back up plans as it is crazily competitive and people in the bonkers Guildford education landscape will have been tutoring for it for years.

St Johns Leatherhead, Cranleigh?

Reigate

I would have a back up or two as the schools are getting harder to get in to. We did the exams last year and the volume of boys taking them has gone up since my other DS took them! A comparable school is Hamptons others that are nice but not as full of high achievers is Reeds or St Johns. Both beautiful schools with lots of good things being said about them. You would need to visit them as I know my view changed based on the head and the feel of the school. Btw RGS takes a fair proportion of state children, mine were state educated and had no tutoring.

For when? The exams are early in the New Year .

Where is he in the meantime? They do offer deferred 13+ entry too. Where else might you consider?

Caterham would be the nearest similar school - also co-ed, with similar results. Also has boarding. Takes in at 11+ and 13+ too including the option for 13+ deferred entry, same as RGS. Caterham has a Prep, and RGS also has a Prep (Reigate St Mary's)

Many kids who apply for one, also apply for the other and the standard seems similar to get in - possibly RGS slightly more difficult, but very similar really.

Other local independent in Reigate is Dunnottar which was a girls school and went co-ed about 4 years ago and has become a real success story as an alternative to RGS - often for those who might need a gentler atmosphere, but who don't get into RGS. Dunnottar seems to do well for a wide range of abilities.

Other schools I have known locals go to are the boys schools in Croydon such as Whitgift and Trinity, nor Woldingham the girls Catholic school, or SevenOaks which is both day and boarding.
