Christmas term break up date

I'm in an area of the country where term ends this Friday, and kids go back on the 8th. Clearly those at the council didn't think how unhelpful this is for preparation for Christmas. Anyone else think it would be much more sensible to have finished by today or at the end of last week and get the kids back earlier in the New Year ? It would enabled parents to take time off before Christmas and prepare with kids, and possibly visit family and friends to take presents. This is far more family friendly than realising you cannot logistically see family until the first week of Jan. I don't envy anyone who needs to travel on the 22nd or 23rd. Parents that are lucky enough to have jobs where you can take holiday at Christmas would be heading back by the 3rd, and not having to deal with childcare for the first week of Jan. Grrrrrrr.

With you OP, the students are becoming very difficult, everyone is knackered and there is fuck al, to do in Jan. We are in week 8 of an 8 week half term, no one is ready to learn. Next half term is 5 weeks!

We broke up on the 12th and go back on the 4th. Actually prefer to break up later and return on the 8th Jan.

My ds broke up on 15th, goes back on the 9th.

Primary teacher and I’m loving the late break up and I’ll love going back on the 8th!

gillybeanz · 20/12/2017 23:54

Mine has been at home from last friday night.
I am so glad, as she boards.
However, it's hard to prepare anything whilst she's here, but we are having fun, she is also eating lots and spending my money, if she was still at a local state school, I'd be moaning for it to be today.

My DC finished yesterday. Just about perfect in my opinion. Today was spent generally being tired & grumpy, day out with friends tomorrow, Christmassy arts & crafts on Friday and then visiting family for the weekend/Christmas period; a few days lull and then away for the New Year weekend; back to school on 4th by which time I will be ready for a change and delighted to go back to work myself

Mine broke up on the 15th. They go back on the 4th jab. I think they finished too early. I still have stuff to do so I've had to trail them around with me! I'm also still working till Saturday, so they're being shipped to grandparents or friends houses.
I would much prefer a later break up.

I think it's really difficult for teachers ... have no idea how those working full time to manage to pack things in and really should have their opinions heard.

However, as a mother, it's the perfect balance. Last year was a nightmare with more than a week until the big day, this time we get to enjoy the time afterwards.

But I really appreciate that not everyone will be happy with how late they break up.

I agree OP, my ds breaks up today and it would be so much nicer if he could have broken up last Friday and we could have eg gone away to visit Christmas markets this week. I don't see the point of having loads of time off in the new year. I suppose if you like ski-ing you could go away after Christmas.

Last year ds broke up on 16th and we went to Edinburgh for a few days to enjoy the market, it was lovely. But this year we couldn't, and next year is the same :(

We broke up Friday 15th and back on 2nd January!!!!! Far too early

I would have preferred this. As there's such a split of opinion I think it should alternate each year so everyone gets what they want every other year.

SandLand · 21/12/2017 08:53

We finish today (international school) after a 15 week term with 1 day off.
The kids are knackered. DS2 had 9 kids in his class yesterday. What are the teachers supposed to teach with over half the class missing?

Surely the break up date depends on which day Christmas falls? In a couple of years time, Christmas will be on a Friday, so the holidays are likely to start around the 18th?

MomToWedThorFriday · 21/12/2017 19:40

Sand the holidays here start on the same date next year, so the 21st (Friday) with Christmas on the following Tuesday. As a colleague and I said today, the LEA are sadists Grin

Honestly though, the kids at work were virtually unteachable this week and my own DCs have been doing crafts and watching films. What’s the point?

MyDcAreMarvel · 21/12/2017 19:47

Mine is like you op and it's much, much better. Plants of time to organise for Christmas while the dc are in school. No rush back to school straight after New Year.

PrimalLass · 22/12/2017 13:53

Actually I have changed my mind a bit. We finished today and it was probably two days too late.

Shadowboy · 22/12/2017 13:55

We broke up on the 15th- way way way to early. And we sadly go back on the 2nd 😩

hellofresh · 22/12/2017 13:59

We broke up on the 6th. That is not a typo. The 6th FFS. I'll trade you OP.
