At ours it is more modern, for enjoyment and exercise not exams.

i did jazz and ballet together as a kid. Ballet from 3 and jazz from 7. As i grew older i preferred jazz - less rules and more freedom of expression. It's not tap-thats completely different. Jazz shoes are soft lace-ups and dancing is more lively than ballet and the music more modern. I still thank ballet for my posture and grace but jazz is fun.

Jazz dance is the style of dance you often see in musical theatre. You can study it just for pleasure or do exams with the various exam boards.

My dd does jazz and adores it! It's much freer and more expressive than ballet or tap - it involves some disco type moves and funkier music. In their last show they danced to Michael Jackson's Earth Song, for example. They wear stretchy black trousers and soft soled lcae up black shoes. Your dd will love it, lexcat!

update on the jazz dance. dd was able to have a trial lesson. I have to say it looked really fun, fast and funkie.
She seemed to like it but was worried about been the youngest (most of the class was 7+ and dd is 6 in two days). One little girl ask if she would be coming back, so she made a friend She also was finding it hard to keep up as she was the only new child. The teacher said she did very well and felt she had pick up a lot in her first class and hoped she would continue. So I am hopeing she will decided to stick with it as it looked really fun.
Makes a change to see her doing well with something out side the school class room.
