He's credited with establishing some of the first schools - how about finding out about them, and what children's lives were like then?

the schools were for the nobility.

yes pershaps she coud be alittle girl (i bet they only educated the boys) who went to one of the first schools

or a frend of Alfreds who grew up with him - sort fo diary

he was one of the first people to translate stuff from Latin as well, wasn't he - is there a Latin / decoding angle to work?
Or a 'what would it be like if things were written down in a different language to spoken things?'

The BBC schools website has loads of ideas for this topic. Will need adapting for home use, but might be a starting point.

After he established peace he went on to establish a number of "burghs" or defensive forts. Lots of these "burghs" can be identified by modern place names. You couldn work our roughtly where they went and then mark on a map how many of them could still be identified and have had an affect on the names of places today.
