There are different counties that have a grammar school system in England (can't speak for the other Home Countries), and then some other Local Authroities that don't have a 'grammar system' but still have some individual schools which are grammar schools.
So, in Kent, my understanding is around 25% of young people go to grammar schools (? am happy to be corrected, this is what I've picked up from MN over the years), yet in Birmingham there are only 7 grammar schools, and there are 1.1million people live in Birmingham, around 40% of whom are under 30, so you can see that only about 2% of children attend grammar schools there.
I understand Manchester is more similar to Birmingham - not a 'grammar school area', but does have some individual schools.

Of course, where there are a lot of grammar schools, that means that the schools which aren't grammar schools in those areas don't have a full range of abilities in their schools - people always tend to post assuming their dc will go to a grammar.

Are you looking at anywhere in the UK ? Anyhere in England? Anywhere in the SE?
What other restrictions do you have? - work commitments, budgets etc.?
