Access to Health studies - Nursing & Midwifery course

I'm due to start an Access course in September in Health Studies - Nursing & Midwifery. Is anyone else doing this course? I would like to find more about the actual course content & wondered if anyone knew where I could find info on the subjects covered/curriculum?
I've searched the internet but can't find what I'm looking for......

im doing access to health studies to hopefully do midwifery, my college does the following...
1st semester -
phsiology- body structure and systems( 3 credits)
study skills (2 credits)
psychology- theory and personality development(3 credits)
Aspects of health and contempory issues.( 3 credits)
Biochemistry (3credits)

2nd semester-
Research (2 credits)
plus 2 further units from -
Physiology- developmental and control systems ( 3 cr)
NHS provision and ethical encounters ( 3cr)
Psychology- theory and human behaviour (3 cr)
past present and future society (3 cr)
child development (3 cr)
biochemisty - genetics and inheritance

also maths , english and IT unless gcse above c grade holders

a minimum of 18 credits must be achieved to gain access cert.

loads of colleges vary though so i dont know what your course will consist of although im sure they are all along the same lines.

there is a girl on here called chloe who has just completed her course, im sure she will have more info as she has already done the course and has a uni place for nursing.

im doin nursing too ndp, it really does sound very confusing ill hopefully find out more when i go for my induction ,

can anyone tell me about ucas and why and, how we have to register ????

and does anyone no what i will need for the course you brainy lot,
at least we wont be stuck for help with all these mners doing the same course xx

Thanks tiredemma that's really helpful. How have you found the course? How much homework have you had to do?

nickola, your college should help you with your ucas form, at the college that i am going to the course starts in sept, the forms go off to ucas around nov/dec time, you have interviews around feb/mar and then if successful at interview you get a "conditional" place at uni, the condition being that you gain enough credits at the end of the term.
there is a website, go into google and type " arborwood nurse forum" its a nursing message board with mainly student nurses on there so that will have loads of info re ucas
also a good website is www.studentmidwives.com its for midwives but most of the women on there are on access courses so it has info re assignments etc, ive found it really helpful.

jasmum- i start this sept but i have two friends who have just completed it, one to do nursing and one midwifery, both have said that its not a walk in the park but its really enjoyable , the one is a single mum with 3 kids under the age of 5, she says by doing assignments as soon as they are set etc and not getting backlogged really helped,

hopefully chloe will log on here and see this post, she posted a few things a few days ago re the course so im sure she can advise you of how much work is involved

your local college should have a website with links to all course info - website should end in .ac.uk
they're likely to have open days in sept where you can go along & get loads of help - recs on which course to go on, where it'll lead you to, support with childcare etc
also www.ucas.ac.uk/ for ucas website
and www.hotcourses.com is v. worth a browse

I was told to expect about 10 hours a week, I just wondered how realistic that was.....

ill ask my friends how much work was required of them at home and post later, i dont start my access course till sept jasmum and my course interviewer didnt say how much homework was required,

I would love to do this course too... Did someone mention somewhere that you can do it part-time over 2 years?
I fancy both Nursing and Midwifery. I think I would especially llike Child Nursing, but unfortunately my local college doesn't offer this option.

im doing the course one day a week over two years wallace,
your college wouldnt offer childrens nursing, this would be taken as your 2nd and 3rd year as specialing at uni.
jasmum, my friend said that the very most she ever spent on work at home was 4 hours a week.

Hi guys. Think i have now decided to do the part time one day a week over two years.
Tried phoning again today but couldn't get hold f the right person. Have emailed them too but had no reply, so me and my friend are just going to go in hopefully one of the days next week and see if we can sort it out.

Jasmum - I did start the course last Sept but gave up just before xmas. I'll be honest it is quite hard (or i found it hard anyway) but then i did have a few personal probs then too.
I AM going to stick at it this time, and i'm really looking forward to it now.

Emma - What are the hours for the one day a week ???

Sorry I meant the nearest Uni campus that does Nursing. They do Adult Nursing, Learning Disability Nursing and Mental Health Nursing. I have just been looking at the website, and I don't know if I would have to do an access course because of the grades I got for Standard Grades/ Highers. But would these still count seeing as this was almost 10 years ago?

I think I would quite like to do the access course though, to see if it was what I really wanted, and also I could do it part-time. I have a 5yrold starting school in August and a 3 year old who will be starting nursery, so one day a week would be perfect.

I have sent off my application for doing the course part-time over 2 years. They said it would be a day or half a day each week.
Dh has said he could take the day off to look after the kids and make it up at the weekend. That would make things so much easier.

i can't believe how many of us there are on mumsnet! We can have a study group

I am going next friday to see if i can still get on the course and get a place at the nursery for Ds.
Feeling quite relived that i've decided to do part time instead.

Nikcola - To start with all you will need is a folder, lined paper, few sheets of plain just incase and pens and pencils e.t.c.
Eventually you will have to get more stuff like felt tips, bigger folders e.t.c.. You'll be amazed how much you end up with.
