Public school - pupils expelled for copulating - hehehe

Story here .

Hehehe

Considering how state schools are routinely disparaged by some on this forum, we sometimes need to be reminded that the perfect darlings at these institutions are just as fallible as those attending state schools, which for the most part, deliver a decent education for those who want it.

Shagging goes on in every school, private or state... teenagers are teenagers regardless of how they are educated.

scatterbrain · 21/03/2007 10:14

What's your point ?

Surely consensual sex at 16/17 is fairly irrelevant to the reasons people choose private education ?

speedymama · 21/03/2007 10:23

My point is that when something bad happens at a state school, it is used by some to justify their beliefs that state schools are not as good as those in the private sector. My personal view is that there is good and bad in both sectors.

I just loved the irony that this happened in a well regarded public school and not a run down comprehensive.

Expelling them seems rather harsh.

GameGirly · 21/03/2007 10:26

Yeah, happens everywhere. As Monkey says, teenagers are teenagers. DH went to Rugby and claims he never got up to anything like that. He certainly made up for it when he left, though ...

nearlythere · 21/03/2007 10:28

he he, i went to public school and dated (then later married!!) the headboy (i was headgirl), funnily enough we never got caught despite everyone knowing we were at it like rabbits!

wanderingstar · 21/03/2007 10:33

Well it's probably in the news only because it's a public school, rather than it being inherently interesting as a story.

geekgrrl · 21/03/2007 10:38

it does seem very harsh - it's not like they were doing something illegal. Imagine having your A-levels messed up because you were caught having sex (as if that wasn't punishment enough on its own) with your bf/gf at 16 or 17.
Teenagers have sex and if you're a boarder you don't exactly have many opportunities to do it outside school grounds
(I went to boarding school in the 6th form and let me tell you - it ain't easy finding a good place for a shag!)

As to what goes on in posh private schools - the school I went to (Blundell's in Tiverton - name & shame!) was absolutely rife with drugs like coke, LDS etc. because so many of the pupils had more money than sense.

frances5 · 21/03/2007 16:38

The private school I went to 12 years ago expelled a poor girl in the middle of her A-levels for getting pregnant.

It was supposely a "Christian" school ...

brimfull · 21/03/2007 16:53

I have a friend whose dd goes to this school...the mum will be howling at laughter about this!
A bit extreme to expel them, will screw up their alevels

Ladymuck · 21/03/2007 16:54

Good heavens, what a curious sentiment speedymama!

I'm also curious to know which MNers you think have perfect darlings at private school - I think that most MNers are only too aware of what their offspring could be capable.

I suspect that there may be a number of parents who opt for private schools because of the discipline exercised by those schools - how many state schools have excluded pupils in similar circumstances?

motherinferior · 21/03/2007 17:03

But I don't want to send my daughter to a school which would exclude her for having sex at a perfectly legal age, Ladymuck.

Hulababy · 21/03/2007 17:05

Happens everywhere. Worked at a very good state school and it happened there; worked at a not so good state school (in special measures) and it happened there too. Both girls were actually 15, not consenting 16 year olds. Oh and at the better school a couple fo kids got send home from a sixth form school trip for sneaking into each other's rooms and got caught having sex. They were over 16 though at least.

Think it was a bit OTT to expel them though - why ruin their education over something that is actually legl, and they were just doing what teenagers do, just got caught.

Not sure it is a good arguement against private school though! Don't think I have tow orry about this with DD just yet (she's 4!), besides no boys at her school anyway (even when she gets to high school)!

motherinferior · 21/03/2007 17:06

I don't want my daughter excluded for being caught having sex with another girl, either!

Hulababy · 21/03/2007 17:07

Is it a full on being expelled? Or a temporary exclusion? Can't believe they were expelled entirely for this one thing!

If so, think this is more a csase of this one school being OTT, rather than it being all private schools - I can't believe most normal private or state schools would ruin a child's education over something so trivial.

Hulababy · 21/03/2007 17:08

LOL - that's true MI; didn't think of that scenario!

Ladymuck · 21/03/2007 17:12

MI - that's great, and is your choice - you of course have a wide selection of schools some of which will may tolerate sex on school grounds. But I'd be a bit surprised if you would gloat if my ds was expelled for breaking rules at our chosen school.

Personally I would expect to be sacked if I was discovered having sex in my office at work, even though I am also of legal age, so I am less bothered by a school having a rule that forbids its pupils to have sex on the premises. And I probably wouldn't send my child to a boarding school which didn't have such a rule - just because if you have teenagers cohabiting, then putting a cut-off at 16 is difficult - especially if a 14 yo boy can leaglly have sex with a 16 yo girl but not vice versa. You have dds so may feel more relaxed about legal sex - just because my 13yo ds is legally capable of sexual activity doesn't mean that I want it happening at school!

scatterbrain · 21/03/2007 17:15

Well - I went to private school and it was certainly an immediate expulsion at my school too. I think it is absolutely right too I have to say ! I would not think much of a school that turned a blind eye to this on their own grounds !

Hulababy · 21/03/2007 17:17

I don't think they should turn a blind eye, but I do think it is OTT to permanently exclude if this is first time these teenagers have been in trouble. Discipline - yes, but to stop their education for one misdemeanour???

scatterbrain · 21/03/2007 17:18

They can go to another school - friend of mine had to mid upper sixth ! She was fine - is now a doctor !

School felt it had to set an example.make a stand etc !

I would expect it if as a parent I knew about it !

ds mate was expelled from school for this 6 months before his gcses which meant that he didn't get any

I think it is ott

he couldn't get another school place

ebenezer · 21/03/2007 18:43

Don't quite get the point at the start of this thread. Seems to me that it wouldn't be news if it wasn't a top public school - therefore it's unfavourable treatment simply on the grounds of being a fee paying school. I have no particular axe to grind here - I work in a state comprehensive and can assure all MNers that teenagers who want to shag will be doing it! I just can't see how or why it becomes a pont-scoring issue!

Blandmum · 21/03/2007 18:53

don't really know why you are glaoting. It happens, even in state schools. Our nearest comprehensive school (V good, people fight to get their kids into it) had to suspend 2 kids for 2 weeks. She was giving him a hand job in a lesson.

Why assume that any school is immune to this sort of thing?

littleEasterlapin · 21/03/2007 18:55

I do think that there is a real maliciousness about the OP. And what on earth does two teenagers having sex have to do with quality of education? Teenagers are teenagers, hormones are no respecter of educational background!

I'm delighted to find out that I was a perfect darling though .
