Noob wanting to know about your ADHD education experiences

So, let me tell you my story. I'm from the US. I moved to the lovely UK when my husband and I were first married, and we were there for several years. When I had my son, I had this overwhelming feeling to move back home. It was some unexplainable gut feeling that I needed to take my child back 'home.' We moved to my home state right before my son's second birthday. When my son was three, he was diagnosed with emergent ADHD and SPD. He was placed in a local intervention program then. He receives excellent care through our school system. I consider it a blessing that he has received the type of care that he has here. My husband wants to move back, badly. He wants to be near his family and all things familiar. I'm open to the idea, but I need to research what ADHD care is like where you are. We do not have a particular location in mind. In fact, if a school were particularly good, we might consider that area. I would really appreciate it if you could tell me about your experiences. Please help us out.

DD2 was not well supported in our local primary, her behaviour was acceptably good and she didn't disturb other children working so she was off their radar. She could happily distract herself from anything she should be doing though and was nowhere near achieving what she could academically. We moved her to a fee paying school where she now has support, teachers who have taken the time to work with her and ensure she is able to achieve what she is capable of, however reading many posts on here not all fee paying schools will be as supportive as this and you may struggle to find one that will be willing to meet his needs.

Health service wise - diagnosis for us was a bit of a waiting game then a couple of follow up appointments before we dropped off their radar for a couple of years. Recently our local service has an ADHD nurse who sees her every 6-12 months to review and we feel we have better support once again. It will be down to the provision in the area you move to as to the level of professional input you will get and could be very hit or miss.

We found primary did not support our son with ADHD at all well. They just saw him as a naughty boy. We felt forced to move him to a specialist independent school where life is so much better for all of us.

It's not great. From what I've seen the U.S are way ahead in terms of the support available. Please feel free to PM me.

DS is currently being assessed with everything pointing towards ADHD and his (state) school have been brilliant. They have taken time to find ways to help him, allow him space to calm when he needs to, extra support for some areas (He has a laptop for handwriting etc) but still push him academically, they are not allowing him to coast along doing the bare minimum (like he tries to!). They have done vast amounts even before a full diagnosis.

However schools vary massively. You would need to visit and speak to schools to make the right choice
