Parents evening (primary school)

I have got my DD (7) parents evening tonight. Any tips? Last one was a complete nightmare and the teacher was very negative towards her. Think there may be a personality clash. DD had a really good relationship with last teacher.

Why was it a complete nightmare? What did the teacher say last time then? I would write a list of questions down to have your own thoughts sorted. Listen to what the teacher has to say and then raise your questions at the end maybe.

Agree it helps to have questions ready so you don't feel so much like you're being talked at.

If you're worried about her being negative, can you think of a couple of things that dd has done well or really enjoyed (or both) this term and bring those up?

Last time teacher had found some paper in her tray with drawings of love hearts and boys name......teacher said that it was inappropriate for her age group (DS is 10 nearly 11 think she may have been copying him!) Also said that she had not ever volunteered to read to her, and that she needed extra help with her numeracy. We have since suggested gentle encouragement as DD was alittle scared of the teacher and it seems to have worked. Reading loads better and have helped her with her numbers lots to. I trully believe it is about school and parents working together, but somehow this one teacher is a bit unapproachable! I am writing a list of questions as we speak!

Arrange an appointment outside of parents' evening so you can speak to the teacher at greater length. Most teachers will be happy to do this. As appointment times are often only 5 minutes, it can be difficult to get a true picture. However, I would be upset if any parent thought I was just giving them negative feedback. There is something positive to say about every child, so your child's teacher needs the chance to set the record straight with you. Good luck.

So we went to parents eve and the teacher said that DD is one of the quiet ones. Usually quietly doing something she shouldn't! Also she has friendship issues...which she thinks is a year 2 thing. Also that she needs a little extra help with her numbers, which we can do.

But the homework set this evening was to list the thing that make us happy and sad. Top of the list was 'when mrs (teachers name) is mean to me!!!

I had my daughters parents evening last night and was very pleased but she actually mentioned friendship issues going a bit pearshaped in year 2 and then settling down again.
