clarinet grade 1 - PANIC!!!

marymoocow · 05/03/2007 11:10

Ds came home on friday after his lesson, to say that his teacher was very anxious that he wasn't going to pass. His exam is a week today.
Anyone with any tips as to how to (a) calm things down, and (b) help him through it.

How do i cope next week as well. Think i will be worse than him

I have not read all of this thread but feel this may help you.

DD is taking her Clarinet Grade 6 next week!!! So we have been through this a good deal!!!

Not sure how old your ds is , my dd is 14 now, up until about a week before the exam we and her teacher are hard on her, then with a week to go we build up the praise and confidence build as much as possible and keep extremely positive. This has worked so far with her passing all first time at merit or distinction.

Shall let you know if it works this time!!!

Seriously, I'm sure he will be fine, has he done any other exams before, because it can be nerve racking!!

Great about the treat we always do that, getting exdpendive now though!!

Let us know how you and he gets on.

By the end of next week I will be in a worse state than her and I bet you are the same!!!

Take care and good luck. X

Dd is off school today, her cold is v. bad and she has no energy, we've both got it.

However she'll be fine by Monday and we do some practising this afternoon.

marymoocow · 09/03/2007 14:22

Thanks for the support pindy.
ds is (or will be 9, its his birthday on sunday). He hasn't taken any other exams at all, but gets very worried about what other people think of him.
Sorry to hear that your dd is not feeling well Cam. Hope she can shake it off before monday.
As an update, ds played (or performed as he put it) in front of one of his friends last night who came round to play. He then played for his dad. We have finally managed to get him to slow the pieces down and they sound a lot better, and i'm sure the adrenalin will speed them up a bit on the day.
He has had his last lesson today, so i'm hoping for good vibes from his teacher when he gets home tonight.
Sorry rambled on again as usual

Hi marymoocow dd's rest yesterday has done her good and she went to bed very early last night and had a great night's sleep. She will be practising this afternoon and tomorrow but I won't drive her too hard

She sounds pretty good to me but then what would I know

Did your ds previously take a prep test for the clarinet ?

SueW · 10/03/2007 11:59

Good luck to all those taking exams.

DD is taking violin Grade 2 but not until 22 March. She is having an additional lesson tomorrow. Practice is intermittent....

Fortunately the exam is done through school and takes place during the school day but when she took her G1 theory last summer, we had to take her elsewhere one Saturdya morning and I was a nervous wreck!

marymoocow · 10/03/2007 22:11

ds had a brilliant lesson yesterday (unless his teacher was trying to boost him ). He certainly feels more confident today. Have taken things very calmly, and he has played through them today. Its his birthday tomorrow, and the family are coming, so he is going to perform for them.
Cam, he hasn't taken any other exams, has just launched straight into grade 1.
Will be thinking of your dd on monday too. Hope she is feeling alot better.

Happy Birthday to your ds marymoocow

Dd practised her singing yesterday and a little bit of violin, will do lots more today and she is also having a lesson in both at school tomorrow morning before the exams.

Good Luck all round !!

marymoocow · 11/03/2007 21:33

Thanks for the birthday wishes Cam. Ds has had a brilliant day. Lovely and relaxed. He played in front of the family, and then had a bit of quiet time playing through his tunes tonight when grandparents, cousins etc. had gone.
Fingers crossed for both our dc tomorrow.
Have finally packed all his things for his residential trip tomorrow as well. Feeling a bit that i won't be able to talk to him about his exam until Wednesday, or give him a hug after, but i know that in reality it is best if dh takes him. I'm a bag of nerves already.
Will let you know how things go when he comes home.
Once again good luck to your dd.
Just think, i've got it all to go through again this time next week, with my dd and her piano

Paranoid mother here.
Nails bitten down to the quick.
As we speak he is doing his exam. Nothing left to do except hold my breath!
He has promised me he will phone as soon as he comes out.
On a positive note he did not seem too worried this morning, and thankfully was more excited about the residential trip. Thank goodness he had that to focus on.

Hope all goes well today for your dd Cam, and anyone else who is taking an exam today

ok, panic over. He's just phoned to say that it went brilliantly. He was certainly very excited. At least he coped with it all, and didn't break down (unlike his mother ).
Will let you all know the results as and when we hear.
Thanks for all your support over the last week. Once again fingers crossed for your dd.

Brilliant - well done to you and your ds. Hope he has a fab time on his trip. I still have to wait til Friday for dd exam, mock sats the day before and another exam on Saturday - what a week!!!

Then we just have to wait for the results!!!

marymoocow · 12/03/2007 12:42

Oh what a week for you Pindy. Hope all goes well for your dd. That's a lot for her to cope with, not to mention you. At least i've now got another week to go before dd piano exam.
Watch out there may be a piano panic thread here yet!!!

Well done to your ds marymoocow, dd's singing and violin exams will now be over and she'll be having her lunch at school.

She was originally going to have the singing one this morning and the violin one this afternoon but when we got to school one of the music teachers came up to us and asked us if dd wanted to the violin one this morning as well as they had a cancellation. Dd said yes.

I will find out how they went this afternoon when I go to watch her swimming in a school gala

Oh and just in case she didn't have enough pressure this morning, she also sat a General Knowledge test paper in the semi-final of a school competition at 9:00 am

marymoocow · 12/03/2007 13:00

Why is it that all these things happen at the same time?
Hope your dd got on ok Cam. Just glad its all out of the way.............................................till the next time

OP posts:
CAM · 16/03/2007 08:38

Dd gained a nice assessment for her singing prep test and although we haven't got the result of her Grade 1 violin yet we met one of the music teachers at parents evening and he said dd had done very well

marymoocow · 18/03/2007 21:53

CAM - Really pleased for your dd, my ds missed his clarinet lesson this week, because he was taking part in the local Eistedford (sp?) with his school choir, so we haven't any feed back from his teacher. Ds feels really confident which is the main thing, at least he coped with the situation. Also had a brilliant time on his residential.
dd ready for her piano exam tomorrow (she was told not to practice too much this week because of overconfidence lol). That just about sums up the difference between the two of them

Quick update. Dd came home from school tonight absolutely thrilled that she has passed her piano exam.
No news about ds clarinet yet, but was told that might be a little longer.

Congrats to your dc's marymmoocow

We got dd's violin results in the post: she managed to obtain a distinction

Am totally thrilled for her, thanks for the support.

She is doing Grade 1 piano exam next term so we'll be practising for that from now on

marymoocow · 31/03/2007 21:00

wow, a distinction , that's fantastic. Congratulations to her, and good luck for next term with her piano.
