Reading tips for pre-schooler

Hi,

My 4 year old has decided he wants to learn to read. He can identify numbers pretty well, and he recognises a few letters. Does anybody have any tips or any methods or books I should look at? How do they learn reading in primary school? I want to encourage him while he has the interest, but don't want to do anything that will contradict what his school will teach him when he starts in September.

Most schools in the UK learn the letters by using phonics so maybe getting the Jolly Phonics books to learn letters.

I would start teach them to write as at our school they started straight away with cursive style letters but just didn't join them together initially. Each school will decide their own way to teach this.

I actually just think continuing to read books to your child will probably be enough initially.

By year one they will be reading and writing and its amazing how quick this happens.

I bought dd the songbird series on advice of mumsnetters. She knows her letters and can now sound out and blend 2 and 3 letters words. She is on the first book of the series and really enjoying it although I follow her lead.

everything that Allthebestnamesareused said my dd is in reception and she is already reading and writing, they do cursive letters, I think it's recently been introduced into the curriculum because my eldest dd in yr2 is now having to learn to do her handwriting joint up, which is a nightmare because it's not what she originally learnt and her handwriting is now a mess but we are working on it.
