It does not have the reputation it used to have with a lot of pupils leaving. There are some great teachers there some not so good but that is the same for most schools. The old head was a very hard act to follow which has not made it easy for the new and generally there is a lot of good choices in the area both state and private and although in the last few years it has had its critics, for some families there is nowhere else like it. It depends on your child and what you are looking for in a school. If you ar looking for a super academic hothouse forget it but if you want a nice gentle start then its fine but some of the children who go on to the more academic senior schools have needed tutors to get them through the entrance exams and one of my main criticisms of it was that academically they never kept the pot boiling with academics pretty soon after the autumn term focusing on enrichment such as plays and sports days which was the main reason for needing tutors to keep on top of academics. However for some that is what made the school special to them.

Thanks a lot User...
This is what I am finding it hard to get a feel for - as there is no senior school its hard to get an idea of the academic standard. We are probably moving to the area around BS but not sure exactly where yet, as my eldest has got a place at Hockerill. Not looking for an academic hothouse for sure, but obviously want somewhere that does deliver a solid basis with which to start senior. Are these issues ongoing? What is the new head like?

It is not a 'hot house' but that does not mean children don't achieve here. I think this year the year 6 pupils got into their chosen schools, like Bishop's Stortford College and Felsted. My children are so happy there and I feel the school works hard to look at each child as an individual, making sure they achieve there full potential in all areas, be it academic, art, music, sport or drama.
