Do children automatically move up at the end of each year?

My dd goes to a small school with mixed age mixed ability classes. When we started we were told Class 1 = Reception & Y1
Class 2 = Y2, Y3 & some of Y4
Class 3 = Rest of Y4, Y5 & Y6
She is in Y1 (class1) and at the end of Reception 3 children were left in Class 1 (tho of Y2 age) as they needed extra help.
Now there seems to be a discussion about whether they move into class 2 this sept and if they don't will they current Y1 move into class 2.
My dd desperatley needs to be in class 2 - class 1 has afternoon break, storytime and a roleplay corner and I feel at 7 she would be better doing maths science geography and history!
What are the rules? can I insist that she moves up?
I'm not being a pushy mother (or at least not much) but even her teacher says she needs more and that I should be encouraging her to do creative writing at home as she is interested....
Any thoughts anyone?

Not sure how small village schools work but in our primary school at the end of each academic year the children move onto the next class and is dependant on when the child's birthday is
ie. reception - age 4-5 (1st Sept - 31st Aug)
year 1 - 5-6 (ditto)

etc.

so, has she done 2 years in class 1. if so i think you have a good case to request that she move to class 2.

Might it also depend on whether they have any new children coming in? My dd also goes to a small school, with just two classes. Depending on the numbers of children at certain ages, sometimes they spend 3yrs, sometimes 4, in the first class, which makes it seem as if they are not moving up. But in fact they all do age and abilty appropriate work and the actual class they are in is immaterial, really. Hope you get it sorted out.
