Can you make a difference?
Are you asked or do you ask?
How many per school?
Any other info...

There was a thread on this a few weeks ago.
If you're not bothered about which school you are a governor for, the LEA will probably have vacancies. The number and type of governors depends on the size and sort of school. I'm a foundation governor - appointed by the Bishop officially but had to apply - in the local Catholic primary school where DSs will go in 2 and 3 years time.

Dear All
Does anyone know whether Governors at Independent Schools are all Powerful. We have a team who appear to be utterly incompetent and have just made 8 teaching staff redundant without any explanation to the parents. We have been told (by the Governors)there is nothing we can do as they run the school. The teachers describe a culture of intimidation and if they stand up to the Governors they can expect to lose their jobs. Any suggestions greatly appreciated as we have a parents meeting on Monday 21 June at 6.30 pm
