Does anybody know what non-verbal IQ is?

Have heard this term used in discussions about my son.

non-verbal vs verbal IQ?

does anybody know what the distinction is?

Assuming this is similar to verbal and non-verbal reasoning (as in the papers sat in the 11+ exam), I would say that verbal is to do with language, word structures, etc., whereas non-verbal is to do with patterns, sequences, shapes, etc.

Does that sound right?

I got the impression that it has something to do with ability to solve problems overall. I was just wondering how IQ can be assessed based on either (specifically)
