NUT Teachers' Strike 5th July

Just wondering how widespread / how well supported this strike is nationwide, and how many parents are aware of it?

Is your school closed / partially closed / unaffected as far as you know? As a teacher, are you striking or not? As a parent, are you aware of the issues that have led to the strike being called, and are you supportive of the strike action?

No notice from dd school and they have tomorrow off so I'm assuming it will be school as usual.

I only know about it because of MN.

I know that the strike is happening, but only from following the news. I haven't heard anything about it from my children's schools yet so don't know if they will be affected.

I know that teachers are under a great deal of stress and strain. I've seen the amount of work that my children's teachers do. Not just the actual classroom teaching but the planning, marking, paperwork, and the out-of-school-hours commitments. Then there are the various meetings and courses that they have to attend.

I don't think the introduction of the new curriculum has helped either. The goalposts have shifted and the teachers seem to be under a lot more pressure to get the children to reach the new standards.

It's getting harder to find new staff when teachers leave. It definitely seems as though supply teachers are being used much more than they used to at my DDs' school to try to fill the gaps.

I don't think they get paid enough for the job they do and support the strike action.

(I'm a parent and not a teacher.)

I've heard today that DS's nursery / preschool will be open on Tuesday

I only realised because the secondaries around here have postponed induction days that were supposed to be on weds. Primary has said it plans to be open.

My dd's school have emailed today to say they're only having y7 and y12 in.

No word from ds's school.

Striking at DDs school. They sent home a letter explaining about the NUT and why they felt it was necessary to strike.

I'm in support of them.

All my children's schools are shut (3 different schools) and I am striking too.

DS's primary is open as usual. One of the local secondaries is closed so any year 6 pupils who were due there for the day have to come to school instead.

I'm NASUWT so not striking. I fully and openly support the NUT teachers taking part in the strike. We all know it's not an easy decision to make.

No, I'm not supportive of teachers striking. My parents were teachers and never would, its simply unprofessional. It only hurts the kids. Sorry, but what planet is the NUT on if they think that just now is a good time to do this? The government has far bigger things to worry about (though in truth they'll be absorbed infighting).

Teachers don't have a hard time compared to many, many other occupations. Anyone working in a company which has to compete to survive doesn't indulge in striking.

I'm in NASUWT so not striking but my school will be closed on Tues due to the number of teachers who are. It's SATs results day on that day so I'll be sitting in my office going through tests papers, very unhappily no doubt.

DS's school is partially affected, including his class. I fully support anyone's right to strike, and hate the current government, but goodness my extremely lenient boss is beginning to loose patience - school concert, sports day,settling days for DD starting in September, then summer holidays, then DD on half days for 2 weeks.

Had a text from our school saying that the teachers had decided not to strike, so school will be open as usual. Tbh, I seem to remember from previous strikes that a lot of them are NASUWT, so this strike wouldn't be relevant anyway.

I would support them if they did strike. They do an amazing job and they're being screwed by this government, as are our children.

Teachers don't have as hard a time compared to many, but that is due to the terms and conditions of employment.

The government want to change those terms and conditions, they refused to attend talks about this so teachers are enacting democratic right to strike.

As to this isn't a good time. There never is a good time to strike.

My DS is off but only his class, the rest of the school are in as normal. None of the other schools my children attend are closing so a rare day off with my youngest

Our letters went out yesterday to say school will be closed on Tuesday. Non-NUT staff are in doing jobs. Haven't heard any adverse reaction from parents so far.

We had a text on Monday to tell us about the strike and another today to say that the school is unaffected and will be open as normal.

We had a message last week from my daughter's secondary school - they are closing as there were too many teachers striking to make teaching viable (even without Year 11s). The Year 10s are still going to their taster day at a sixth form college as they will be accompanied by non striking staff. My daughter is Year 10 so won't have an extra day off school !
