Sodding name tags on everything - help!

very boring subject, i know...

ds1 starting at a new nursery/preschool in jan. have a million and one name tags to apply to specific locations on clothing etc (a uniform.stupid bloody things - might help if they didnt all look exactly alike! whatever)

declined iron-ons on the grounds some fabrics say do not iron... but having sewn 2, yes 2, labels on so far...am inclined to try anyway...

-will it ruin the clothes?
-do they stay on?
-where can i get some delivered/made in time for jan 11th start??

Depends where on clothing/type of clothing.

DD went on a PGL activity holiday in the summer and I labelled all her stuff with easy2name iron-on names - the ones which are letters. I had white and black and put them just under the waistband at the back on all joggers, along the foot of each sock, just under the neckband at the back of each tracksuit jacket, etc.

If put on the waistband, I'm sure they wouldn't last but where I put them, they still are months later.

These were all cotton heavy fabrics.

I have also used iron-ons inside her dancewear, leotards, swimsuits but the labels don't last as long and you MUST use a tea towel or similar between your iron and the fabric so the fabric doesn't melt.

I.e. sandwich

tea towel
transfer
garment

I think mumsnet have a discount agreement with easy2name.

I havn't used Easytoname but I found that iron on tags fell off after a few washes. We are supposed to put them in specific places but I am a bit naughty and put them where they are more discrete.

I'm going to get sew in ones next time, despite them being a complete pain.

oh you have just goiven me the best idea... im going to pay someone else to do it! (tis good to know your own limitations, i think )

M&S will print out some iron on tapes as you wait. I used Easy to name and also the ones in GLTC. The GLTC ones were great (though I'm not a fan of GLTC in general), and have lasted over a school year. After 4 terms I'll have to replace some of the sock ones, but everything else has been pretty much stayed named.

I don't think that it is just uniform alone that it is a problem to be honest, especially at reception age. If you're lucky your child will remember what underwear they were in before they changed for swimming but I really wouldn't bet on it.

and then, in one years time, wil have to label over these lables with ds2's name as hes only 1 yr behind...

For nametape purposes I did "Ds1" "ds2" "surname" to get round this.

Trust me - name tapes are a pain but you wouldn't believe what children manage to lose. And if it isn't named you have no chance.

if you have more than one DC and hand down their uniforms just get your nape tapes to say your Surname then you dont need to change them.

My DS (ages 6) hates it if he has one of his siblings names in his clothes!

i put the telephone number on the tags along with our surname in case it gets lost outside of school.

I have spent nearly 20 years doing this... except sometimes we got the nanny to do it and then we found a dry cleaners which offered a sewing on service so if it's a whole new uniform for two twins as we had 3 years ago we outsourced it to them. If it's just a new pair of socks I do it myself. There are good sticky things you can put into shoes by the way probably on the "cash" web site which work well.

I've also used an indelible pen, much easier than tapes. But my ds has an unusual 3 letter name so that's all I have to write.

I use the indelible pen, too. I did try the tapes but got bored and then there was the cutting them out to pass uniform on to next child. Had a short burst at trying the iron-in ones but found they screwed up and got gum on the clothes after a couple of washes. So have stuck with the pen as the best option.

try these - clip in name tags take a fraction of the time of sewing or ironing in - and they last really well!

nope they dont stay on, I have tried a lot of brands of the iron on type.

If they are clothes that are being washed with great frequency it doesnt take much time to come off.

Its worth the effort to stitch them in as you wouldnt be best pleased when an item goes missing never to be recovered eh?

I have been really lazy with labels and my brilliant mum has sewn on my 2 lo's labels. Well thats what grandmas are for

She can sew on 6 by the time ive got my needle threaded!

if you've got two children in quick succession then i think the thing to do is order them as
'ds1 surname ds2' and then you only have to do the sewing bit once... the first time people will ignore ds2's name and when ds2 goes you can score ds1's name out with indelible pen... does that make sense?

although lord only knows what you're supposed to do if you've been a flibbertigibbet and managed to pop out three babies under four, eh nappies?

I just write our surname in on the label in pen.
