Advice on Schools/ Life in Sheringham, Norfolk

Hi there. The other place we've been considering moving to aside from Whitstable is Sheringham in Norfolk. Would be super interested to hear any stories about the schools and the way of life up there. Thanks in advance.

A lovely small, traditional seaside town in a beautiful part of the world. Though Norwich (a 'fine city') is perfectly accessible by car, bus or train, Sheringham does have the feeling that it is at the end of the known world - like much of Norfolk. Travel links in Norfolk are notoriously 'challenging'. You have to want to live here and be seeking what it has to offer. The Little Theatre puts on good fare in the season; there is an active choral society. The visual arts are strong. The area is a painter's, walker's, sailor's, wildlife enthusiast's delight. Sheringham High School does well - for Norfolk. Gresham's School is nearby and is very lively on the arts scene. But the area is a world unto itself. If you are seeking this, you will be happy.

Ahh Jeelba, thank you so much for that. Had a quick squiz at the High School stats in Sheringham and it sounds strong. I'm in two minds about the isolation in Norfolk. Norwich is pretty nearby and really quite tremendous- reminds me of York. So hopefully that's enough to stave off the boredom factor! Need to go and do a v thorough reccy, though. Having kids be more "free range" and for all of us to enjoy the beach etc. Are both strong appeals. Plus being somewhere that folks have more time for each other. Could be a sdhock, though... Do you find people friendly and the communities cohesive in Norfolk?

In spite of Norfolk natives having a reputation for being 'unfriendly' towards incomers, I have never found this to be the case in the 30 years I've lived here - in a village throughout my children's childhood and now in a coastal town. I've had good neighbours, the children made good friends. I have really enjoyed the sense of community, as have all my children from their earliest years - and now my two eldest, who are back here from choice, raising their young families. And certainly being able to be 'free range' and 'in the big outdoors' has compensated for the problems of transport during the teen years. Sheringham has a considerable number of incomers anyway (many of them retirees). There is a lovely selection of housing, pleasantly affordable to people coming in from many other areas. I'd recommend a visit in winter. If you like it then, you'll be responding to the 'real' Norfolk. Good luck with your search!

I work in Sheringham every now and then. I grew up in Norfolk but moved away for a few years. I came back to raise my dc here. It is remote, wild and beautiful in its somewhat faded glory. The pace of life is slower and transport is quirky but it's smashing. It is a wonderful to grow up here.
