At what age would you suspect/detect dyslexia.

If a child is behind his peers in reading/spelling at 7, dyslexia would certainly cross my mind.
The Dyslexia Ins. (now dyslexia action?) will do tests on pre-school children which give some indication if a child is likely to have problems of this nature. We paid for this test for DS4 because there is a history of dyslexia in my family.

I started to suspect a couple of months ago that DS2 (just turned 8 now) was dyslexic. We had him assessed and yes, he is. Children obviously develop at different rates but if they are really struggling with the whole reading thing by the time the majority of their peers are reading chapter books, it's probably worth having it checked out.

You will find the information on this page useful:

Should I have my child assessed?

Thankyou Maverick, and everyone else.

DD is only 5, and is still very young probably for you to think that i should be worried, but my instinct is telling me that thee is something not quite right with her ability to recognise letters and numbers.

she mixes letters an numbers and cant define which is which. She cant remember any letters except those which spell her first name. (by this i mean she can write them but she couldnt tell you what they are), she can tell you how nmany beads are on a plate but she couldnt pick out the number or write it.

I am going to speak to her teacher today and see how she views her progress, at parents evening she expressed surprise at dd not yet knowing her key words, i dont know if that was maybe a hint?

I have spoken to the teacher, finally, she is lovely and has reassured me. DD is progressing well, and this week seems to be turning a corner.

Teacher said she is taking it v slowly with DD, teacher is also the special needs co -ordinator and so i would suppose she would spot any problems very early anyway
