Why do I want to be a SCHOOL GOVERNOR

I put my name forward for parent Governor and now I have to write a paragraph about why I want to do it. The reason is that I want to give something to the school and I think I may have some skills that are handy but that is not going enough to convince people to vote for me. I have been doing a lot of fundraising in the past year as I truly believe that parent involvement is important.

Any ideas. I need to write a 'paragraph' selling myself.

Looks to me like you've just written it!!!

HuwEdwards · 27/11/2006 15:43

agree - embellish your OP a bit, and you have it.

drosophila · 27/11/2006 15:46

DO you think that's enough???

no, but you're half way there. I think you need to mention your skills/contacts and link them to how they might help the school. Also list any previous work/life experience that could help in the role too.

Do you have a set number of words that you have to stick to?

personally I think that the fact you are already involved with the school via fundraising says an awful lot.

We've just had 5 nominations for one post and only one of those people has ever been seen at a PTA meeting or volunteered to help with school events - I know where my vote is going.

Good luck by the way!

I'm going to stand too, as we have two vacancies for parent governors coming up. In our case, we have to limit ourselves to 100 words. I am on the PTA, always help out on stalls at fetes, volunteer in the classroom 2 a week and in the resource room once a week, was class rep for one son's class last year. Oh, and I used to be a branding consultant. Mmm. Any other pointers?

Tell parents what you do that they DON'T see - skills/experience gained outside of the school environment ie in work/other vounteering and how that would help the school. Governing is about managing the 'business' of the school - hiring staff/running budgets/liaising with the borough/ editing the school improvement plan etc as well as the bits most people (certainly me before I was a governor) think of around the ethos of the school, curriculum etc.

Good luck - it's rewarding and you learn loads!

DimpledThighs · 27/11/2006 19:26

wow - at our school we have one parent gov place vacant (don't look at me - I chair the preschool!) You are really lucky to have school where parents are involved.

I would focus on things like linking into the local community as that appeals to me.

Emphasise the fact that you have done a lot of fundraising already.

What are your skills?

Which committee do you think you could best contribute to?

Sorry, just things to get the ball rolling!

UnderWItnessProtectionCod · 27/11/2006 19:38
