Governors

DS attends a small independent school. I would be interested in becoming a governor. Presently there are no parent (or staff) governors and the current ones have been there for years, are pretty elderly and Imo a bit out of touch! I asked the HT about being a parent governor with the hope of being able to inject some fresh enthusiasm into the school and having experience of being a parent of a pupil who is experiencing the school etc. the Head basically said that we can't have parents as we are an independent fee paying school where finances are discussed. This seems really odd to me and I've never heard anything like this before. I have never been a governor can anyone else shed any light on this before I pursue it?

We have many parents who are Governors at our small independent school, and yes finances are discussed and discreetly.

From our independent school website "There are 20 governors who represent a wide cross-section of the business, legal and academic interests in the area. Some are parents or ex-parents and some are Old **erians.

At DD's (state) school we have parent, staff and community governors. To be run properly a school needs a wide selection of governors from different backgrounds.

We have different committees within the governing body so it could be possible to be a parent governor without being on the finance committee.

I find it concerning that the school are being cagey about finances and also not allowing any parent governors. It sounds like they have something to hide.

Thanks for the input. Glad it's not just me thinking it's a bit strange! Will investigate further now I know this seems unusual.
