SATS A quick question???

My ds is in yr 6 and his sats are next week. Iam wondering how confidential are the exam papers??
Will his teacher have looked at them already? Or is it very strict that she opens them on the day in front of witnesses!!!!
I only ask because there is a very competitive girl in my ds class who does very usually in end of yr exams and always comes in the top 3. Her mother is a yr 6 teacher in another school. Does this mean her mother has acsses to the questions
How does this work.

Oh and just one more question does antone know when the results come back?

teachers are not allowed to look at them
it says in the rules and this year it categorically states that looking is malpractice - clearer than ever before this year......

results come back fist or second week in july
school have to legally report them to you

also the school can only open them 1 hour in advance of the test being taken at the very most

another addition -
teachers are also not allowed to look at the completed tests although they are returned to the school after they have been marked in july

Thats v intersesting that the teachers are not allowed to look at the completed test, Do you think they stick to that?
Are they in a sealed envelope in the heads office or something. At the risk of sounding paranoid this girls mother is the pushy parent from hell and I'll bet if she could sneak a look in her own classroom she would.
Do the results state if you came in the top percentage in the country in a certain subject?
My ds has been getting 98- 100% in maths and science mocks, and he is very keen to know.
Sadly he is only scraping a level 5 in english as his interst in this is zilch.
But he loves his maths especially.
God hope I don't sound like the pushy parent from hell Iam not honestly :0

there will be teachers who look at the completed tests - but the guidance is clear and in black and white. there is a big clamp down this year on 'malpractice' there is even a malpractice helpline too. Once they are done, they are collected in, stored under lock and key and have to be parcelled up and sent off within 48 hours of the test.

Opening the tests is very strict. We don't usually open them until about 10 minutes before. Schools are also checked up upon by the LEA (SATs Police!!!) and they come unannounced at any point during the week.

As for the results, no, you won't get told where in the country your DS is bt rest assured, if he is getting 98-100% in a test he is in the top of his age range!

Oh god that sounds awful:0 honestly I don't want to know where he comes in the country. He could be 2 millionith :0
Suddenly got visions of everyone reading this thinking I want my ds in tge top 3 not of the class but of the country!!!
I just remember in yr 2 his teacher telling me he just missed being tge top something percent. I didn't question it at tge time but I was wondering how he knew.

But the sats don't matter to the pupils, surely. They are designed to test the school, aren't they. They aren't like GSCEs which do count.

BTW i am on the sick today after dragging myself in last week against the advice of my GP

Your right Aloha, The sats should be just for the school but in our school the results determin top 3 in class and every July we have a prize day with the pomp and ceromony and a big fuss made of whose 1st 2nd 3rd.
I wish it didn't happen but it does and despite us telling ds it is not important he is v copetitive and would be upset if he wasn't placed.
But Iam sure he'd get over it and as I keep telling him he's only 11 it makes no difference to him at all its not gcse's.

Is it true that secondary schools use SAT levels to stream Y7 initially?

In the secondary school I work at we have streaming for Maths, English and Science. Many other subjects are also streamed but take on one of the 3 core subject 'streams'. Initailly these are done based on SATs and teacher assessments. Then in the first half term the school runs CATs (cognative ability tests). These and the SATs are then looked at again and children may or may not be moved about depending on how they match up.

Children are occasionally moced sts during the year at other times after internal exams, etc.

Hope this helps. If I remember more about this process I will come back and post when more time.

I work in a secondary school and the sats results are used so that we can 'set' children. We also use internal tests and there is a fair bit of movement in the fisrt two years. We use then to minimise the repitition of work for the higher sets.
