How to make a recipe card that a 3 yo finds easy to follow? Typeface, caps, colours etc? Am clueless!

Ok ds loves to make cakes etc, is starting to sound out words a little, gets highly frustrated that he can't read recipes.

So I am making recipe sequence cards for him. I want them to work pictorally (have downloaded pics of ingredients that we use etc) as far as possible. however, I do want the written instructions on there as well.

so

a. any tips, ideas et

b. do I use uppercase/lowercase/mixture (am getting very hung up on this) and also-coloured text? Is this ok?

Am clueless. Pls advise.

Use short sentences (Add the flour. Mix it up.)as much as possible, and definitely use lower case with capitals as you would in ordinary writing.

What about stuff like "a" that is different between print and typing? Should I use a font that has a "writing" "a" (and "g" and so on?)

I would. I help at dds school, and all of her class are confused by the "fancy 'a' ". They are 5/6.

(its not for teaching reading, its just that I don't want to set up any sources of confusion IYSWIM. And he is recognising words, so I don't think it will utterly go over his head)

Fillyjonk - this takes me back!

I did some of these for ds2. Basically just lists of ingredients, rather than 'instructions' as such. It was ages ago, and I can't find them electronically, but if you CAT me your address I could post them on to you to give you an idea of what worked for us?

(I read your post, and went and found them screwed up at the back of the recipe books shelf, so they're not exactly in pristine condition - but they would give you an idea.)

PS by 'list of ingredients' I actually mean pictures, but with the writing added as well.

I used lower case letters throughout at this stage, and just black text.

I simplified the language as much as possible - i.e. I wrote 'flour' in large print, then just added 'self raising' as a note in small text for my benefit. I used a large font size throughout. (I think I used Sassoon Primary Infant, but any sans serif font with a 'primary a' would be fine.)
