At dd's consultation evening the teacher showed me a bead string that the school had just purchased for maths. There were 5 sets of different coloured beads - red, white blue (repeated) along the string. She said they would be using this to help children with simple addition and subtration. I have made dd one from her beads and she is using it well. She was 6 yo in OCtober btw (yr 1).

Sorry I haven't explained properly - I should have said sets of 5 beads on the string e.g 5 red, 5 blue, 5 white - repeated to about a total of 30 beads.

He could count with buttons/toy cars etc at home if it helps him not sure about what to do in the class room though.

Ohh like an abacus?

teach him to hold 10 in his head

think 10 .. put up one finger and add it on

or do the abacus

or do it with chocolate drops / raisins

make it fun though

Yes but on a string - the teacher was pretty excited about it and apparently all the children would have access to one but not to keep so that's why I've made dd one - she also runs out of fingers and toes She's been doing quite sum adding to over 15 today which is amazing as before she wouldn't go above 10 - that's her comfort zone It also help then count in 5's. Sorry rambling now
