Teaching EAL students in Secondary school - any experience?

I'm going for an interview soon for a position in a secondary school, to tutor students who don't have English as a first language. Has anyone out there done this kind of job before, and do you have any advice for doing it well? Smile
I'll be mainly supporting their English, but tying it in with their curriculum if needed. It sounds like I'll be teaching relatively small groups and will be developing/using my own materials rather than the school's.
Any advice is welcome as I'm a wee bit nervous!

You'll need as much support as you can get from your Local Authority's EAL advisers.

What experience and qualifications do you have in this area? You might be better posting on the TES forum - there's an EAL section.
