What exactly is an IEP?

Just got back from parents eve. I've been worried about dd aged 7 for a while and her teacher is too she says dd will be getting lots of one on one time. I feel happy that this teacher will be good for her. She also said she may need an IEP - I don't really know what this is and what is means. anyone?

my ds(5) has one and it helps him catch up in the areas he needs to build confidence in. it's really helped him come along and he gets one to one help.

my dd1 has one, i just signed it today. she getting her with her handwriting and phonics.

Basically an IEP is a plan to help your dd achieve certain targets. The targets will depend on what your dd needs help with but can be anything from "X will sit on the carpet at carpet-time without hitting anyone" to "X will form the letters of the alphabet correctly when writing in class."

Each target will also have a section where the staff set out how they plan to achieve this, eg "X will have his own cushion to sit on at carpet-time" or "X will spend 10 minutes of each day with Mrs Y and practice letter formation with her fingers."

They should also include criteria for success, eg "X can form her letters consistently over a period of 3 weeks."

Some schools will invite parents to the meeting where targets are decided on. Others will give you a draft copy and ask you to sign it if you are happy.
