RGS - Any advice from parents who have had a boy sit the exam

After much wrestling with what's for the best, I've submitted an application for 11+ exam in January for DS. He's keen to give it a go. RGS is local to us. He attends a local state primary school and last summer he attended the RGS summer school (they do an outreach programme with local schools - 2 pupils or so are asked to attend RGS for a week). He loved it so much he would like to go there. He's not applying for anywhere else. The RGS don't have any past papers for reference, so it's hard to know how to prep him accurately. I don't want it to be a massive shock for him or anything! Any advice on boys who have sat the exam before most welcome. Or it would be good to hear from anyone else in a similar position - feeling quite isolated here as it's not really a subject his school are particularly keen on discussing with me. They have too much else to attend to. Thanks.

I have done this twice with my sons - same situation, summer school, state primary, gave RGS a try. Both got in and love it, it really is an amazing school. Do PM me.

Hi IvyS - that sounds great. Thanks. Will PM you

I thought they meant Newcastle RGS! There are obviously quite a few private schools which use the words royal grammar in their name.

beegee · 23/10/2014 07:59

Yep. Apologies! I'm new to the 'RGS' world. I should've clarified on topic heading Confused

No advice as DS is now 23 so my info is too historic but just to say it is a fantastic school and was worth every penny of our hard earned money (we stretched ourselves to be able to afford it). DS had an incredible education there and made friends who he still sees regularly. I would have no doubts in applying, giving it your best shot and seeing what happens - if it is the right school for him then he will get a place.

Just to say I have finally answered your message and to agree with everything DizzyDalmatian says!

Sorry to jump on an old thread but does anyone have any advice for the interview following the entrance exam?
My son has an interview on Saturday and am wanting to prepare him. I too have to meet with the bursary officer as we are applying for 100% bursary - any idea what I’ll be asked ? TIA

123EyesOnMe · 04/02/2020 11:34

@ceeceeanne ....this thread is from 2014 Smile There is another current RGS thread though...you may have more luck there. I didn't realise they were still interviewing...such a long process...good luck!

ceeceeanne · 04/02/2020 12:23

@123EyesOnMe
I know I was searching and can’t find anything !! Could you paste me into it or give me the title xx

toetheline20 · 04/02/2020 13:40

@ceeceeanne which RGS do you mean, Guildford or Newcastle? Just as your other post is titled RGS Newcastle but the main RGS thread is for the Guildford school....

All a bit confusing!

ceeceeanne · 04/02/2020 14:33

Sorry Newcastle
Just was after general advice for interview
