Since you so cruelly used up the 1000th post... happygardening - you don't have to keep justifying your choices to me! If I were in your position, I would have made the same choices. I'd just have this annoying guilt thing going on at the same time, because it's part of my personality. I'm sure in the Middle Ages I would have been one of those hair-shirt wearing types. Grin

I wouldn't have any guilt at all. It is inequitable that people have different amounts of money. However, I'd rather that than live in a communist state.

Just because it's possible for a situation to be worse than it actually is, that doesn't mean guilt can be eradicated. Now, where's that hair shirt gone? Grin

OMG

Why are people so bothered about how families spend their money?

Unless you want a communist state where everyone earns the same, and everything costs the same throughout the country, just spend your money how you want to!!!

My kids attend private school, and I would hate people to make assumptions about our values. And for the record, my children mix with a wide range of children.

OMG - I'm sure the Tsar of Russia thought that, too. Grin

I've always wanted to use by 999/1000th post. Maybe I need to get more of my life!
I rarely attack others people choices, (although as many know of course Im slightly anti Eton) so I'm always annoyed when people who ultimately know nothing about me and my family arrack mine. I often suggest to people that they look objectively at both sectors. Some may think that we're not meeting "ordinary" people on a regular basis but I do know from the people I meet that most do what's right for them in their situation and what works well for A won't necessarily work well for B.
Your right of course rabbit to feel guilty that so few have so much, whether we're talking nationally or internationally its disgraceful in the 21st century. I've spent many an hour trying to think of a solution to this but Im not sure if I can come up with anything workable with out having a very significant impact on our affluent Western lives so I don't think Id stand much of a chance if I stood for PM. "Arrack" what the hells wrong with the predictive thing on this iPad?
Attack not arrack.

Congratulations on the 1000th post happy.

I had to laugh at the thought of actually moving somewhere deprived for the sake of "exposure". Other than in "Secret Millionaire" no one in their right mind would choose to do that? Even then, they do it for only a week.

Everyone wants to get OUT of that situation, and doing so would (a) be really, really weird, and (b) be very patronizing. It sort of reminds me of Slum Tourism.

In my philosophical mood its like that scene from Educating Rita, when she talks about everyone wanting to sing a better song.

If you are faced with dire schools, your dc future mapped out at 11 because of no good suitable schools and you get the chance, you take it.

We couldn't do it for our older children but dd may have other opportunities to reach her potential.
