Welcome to Mumsnet. You may find it helpful to post this in the local forum for Croydon.

In terms of state schools, many of these allocate their places according to distance, so it does depend on where you live. In practice you may not have a choice of state schools at all - it will come down to where you live. In terms of private prep schools it would be worth looking at Elmhurst and Cumnor House.

I suspect whichever sector you look at, there will be relatively few computers used in the first few years of schooling, when the emphasis is social education, reading writing and maths.

Thanks Lady Much -:)

Cumnor House is relatively close to us . I was just not sure as it seems more focused on sports and music. I was looking at something like STEM education like we have in USA for the kids to develop from the age of 4-5 .

But thank you .

Much Appreciated.

Kind Regards,

In fairness at this stage the private schools will be trying to prepare their pupils for entry to senior school. Given that currently independent senior schools off scholarships for sport, music and art, then this is where the prep schools concentrate, as well as academics of course. Some schools now offer DT scholarships, so there may be a shift over time.

Thanks Ladymuck Apologies for the misspelling above

Much Appreciated -:)

What is your personel pref . Cumnor House Vs ElmHurst .
Or a state school around this catchment area.

You seem to have a good understanding.. Your advise will help us a lot.

Kind Regards

In part it would depend on what your preferences are for senior school. If State grammar then Elmhurst, if independent then Cumnor. If undecided then I suggest that you look at the parking at the start and end of the school day and see which is more bearable!!! Boys do move between the 2 schools especially once parents have formed preferences on senior schools.

Thanks Ladymuck ! Much Appreciated.

Whitgift is our choice for senior.

If he is 4 before next September you may find the year group is already full at many private schools. Presumably you know to apply for state primary in January and that you can only express a preference for specific schools not a choice.

Ladymuck · 29/09/2014 16:18

That's a point. Apparently some siblings at Cumnor didn't get in because they'd forgotten to register in time and the Treetops nursery contingent filled the places.

Musheer · 29/09/2014 16:30

Thanks Lizs and Ladymuck. Much Appreciated.

He wont be .

His DOB - 12th June 2012.

Thanks i will have CH as my choice for Jr and for progress to Whitgift for senior. If something drastically changes and we move to the states. I read STEM is to launch in Croydon in 2015.-:)

We want him to get the best as all parents want. Thank you for all your help, support and patience. I

Kind Regards

All UK state schools will (should?) be teaching programming from year 1 now (aged 5-6), so you should ask about this at any schools you are considering. Certainly at my son's state primary, they have been familiarising themselves with computers from nursery onwards. This week they are making self portraits using a program on the tablet computer, for example.
