Would you call this RE or worship?

Before I take the story further please understand that yes, this is a CofE school, but that we live in one of the rural areas where the only schools are church schools. We did not therefore 'choose' this school the way parents in more urban areas might - it simply is the school to which village children go. Next school is 5 miles, also CofE. Next school after that, another 7 miles, also CofE...

So, my point. Every week, along with daily short class assemblies and prayers, and a weekly whole school assembly, there is a 'lesson' called 'Open The Book'. This lesson is taught by the vicar, who reads a Bible story to the children and then they must act the story out. The children are told that this is a true story that they are re-enacting. This happens every week all through the year for all age groups, always led by the vicar and always a Bible story.

Mumsnetters, in your opinions, is this Religious Education, or is it an act of worship?

RE why?

Nandocushion · 12/09/2014 21:13

Worship.

SanityClause · 12/09/2014 21:22

I would say act of worship.

However, my DDs didn't go to a church school, but they tell me were told bible stories as if they were true.

Whether the school actually did say the stories were true is irrelevant, really, if the children thought they did.

Still, neither of them believe the bible is true, now, which has more to do with discussions with me and DH, and lively debates in RE at senior school.

I went to RC school and this would have been RE - although only RC was taught. So yes maybe worship

Snapespotions · 13/09/2014 23:01

Definitely worship if it's being presented as the truth. This is why state schools should be secular!!

Why are there two threads on this? Isnt one enough?

ColdCottage · 14/09/2014 04:57

Worship.

I believe that the bible is not allowed to be taught as true in schools. For example they can't teach the creation story as true.

I went to a c of e shook and some of the children, for example the Jehovah's Witness sat in the classroom while everyone else went to the (religious) daily assembly. I would have my child sit out of these classes.

There are two threads because I accidentally clicked post twice. Maybe if you hadn't bumped this one it would have died by now!
