GCSE resits

Was hoping for some advice.

DS didn't do as well in his GCSEs as expected and missed his predicted grades by a fair way. Luckily his results were still good enough for the A level courses he wanted. However he did fail all his science subjects.

It's likely he will want to go to uni post A level, provided he gets the grades of course - but I'm not clear on whether given that's his goal whether he should be resitting one or more of the sciences? His school seem to think its not necessary but there seems to be conflicting info on the uni sites, and I'd rather we get it sorted out now than find out its an issue when we get to Ucas application time. He's thinking of teaching as a career and a science pass seems to be an essential requirement.

How should we approach this with school? He has changed schools for six sixth form which is an added complication.

Yes he does need science to teach - tell the sixth form. They may not offer gcse science though (most sixth forms seem to only offer maths and English gcse, although ours offers science too). In that case he may need to do it elsewhere.

I've told DS to speak to his tutor about it. I don't even know if we should have applied for remarking, he got Ds in all but was predicted A/B. His last school didn't offer any advice or guidance. I'm also not sure where he could redo his GCSE if not at sixth form, the nearest college is 3 buses away...

My local sixth form does a year of GSCE resits. Could he look at that and then do A levels?

The rest of his grades though not as good as they could have been were all passes and good enough to get him onto his A level courses, I don't think he'd want to resit everything, he's started his A levels now and is really enthusiastic. I just want to make sure he has a science so he's still got the chance of uni/ teaching IF that's the route he decides to go down.

It's not to late to apply for a remark OP: the deadline for this is 17th September. You will need to contact his old school though and explain why he needs the grade C.
Most schools would pay for the remark if a student's grade was different to predictions by more than 2 grades. The old school should have given more guidance about this - see if you can speak to the Head of Science there. HTH
