I've found the following tips on Dads and Sons site (www.dfes.gov.uk/dadsandsons) and thought there were some great ideas for dads to get involved with their son's education. If anyone else has any ideas, would be pleased to hear them!

  1. Watch TV quiz shows together and see how many questions you can get right. Sit with the encyclopaedia and get him to look up the answers while the contestants are scratching their heads.

  2. Blackjack is one of the many card games involving maths- which will help him do sums in school.

  3. When you order a takeaway tell your son what you've got to spend and get him to work out if there's enough to cater for everybody's different tastes in the family.

  4. Planning to visit relatives or friends in another part of the country? Get your son to look it up on the map and work out the best route from A to B, whether you are gong by car or public transport.

  5. Spend half an hour in the kitchen trying to work out the science behind a recipe. Shortcrust pastry, for instance. The books say you should use equal amounts of flour and fat. What happens if you halve the amount of fat? do the ingredients combine still?
