Verbal apraxia - did anyone do mainstream over language base?????

Hi as you can tell trying to figure out what to do, really interested to hear if anyone did mainstream with 1:1 rather than a language base and did it prove good and your child progress well or did it not work? My child has apraxia but so far nothing else and very social happy boy. Thanks guys

I teach a child in mainstream with this, so it is perfectly possible. Check that the school has someone able to support the SALT- we have ELKLAN trained TA's. how often would the SALT visit and can they offer training and support to school staff.
in this case it has worked in some ways but not others, but he has a number of SEN, not just the S&L need. Are they able to offer a fixed term place before returning to mainstream? I have seen a 2 year placement work brilliantly.

Thanks queen of Louisiana sorry for the daly I didn't think anyone had replied that's lots. My son just has verbal apraxia which we are finding is quite rare on its own without other issues but we seem to be find nothing picked up in his 2 kindergarten or by child physics etc. He is online I hope for a 1:1 with him in school and a speech and language therapist once a week in school, the school are fantastic and have him in there pre-school there and really are happy to have him with support in there school they have been amazing and are going out of there way to help, they also have experience of a child with speech problems on a sen statement that has just left. my issue is he is a normal little boy who is incredibly social and loves his friends, it is only 15 to a class small school.

The speech unit has various children with speech issue but also learning and behavioural problems which is different to My son, this isn't a problem but I feel mainstream would suit him best but battling with the language base being the best for his learning and whether a school could match this with all the statement help hopefully he will get?

Has the boys speech developed well and has he struggled a lot? My son also has expressive and receptive language delay and possible disorder. Would really appreciate your advice I am driving myself mad x

a friend's little boy is in mainstream with verbal dyspraxia and is doing very well. the parents if I remember right paid for a SALT to come into school to top up the support he was offered, or something along those lines. Would that be a possibility? I mean he SHOULD get the support he needs but I gather it is very hard to get enough hours so in order to enable MS school you may have to consider something like this.

is there a 'combined' option where he could be in mainstream school but then go to the unit for a certain number of hours a week? I know this kind of thing can happen and happens with deaf units etc so worth investigating.

Ah that's really interesting thanks lots, I hadn't thought of that that is a really good idea. Was the boy quite bad at talking my son can say 2to 3 words together and is trying sentences but very intelligible.

He could mix I think but not so sure how he would settle with that but is again worth asking. we're you aware of any problems or bullying he may have encountered?

My son is 6 and in Y1 now, but went into a mainstream school with Verbal Dyspraxia at the age 4.5. We were pressured to put him into a school with a language unit but he has 3 older sisters and really wanted to go to the same school he has been visiting since he was born. He was having weekly 121 Nuffield therapy.( since almost 3 years) and was making progress and had a 121 statement for 15 hours a week. At the point he started school he could say short sentences that would be understood 60% of the time, now most people can understand him 95% of the time.
He got signed off ST about a year ago and his statement was not renewed for this academic year but he's doing fine.
He has friends and doesn't get teased for his speech but he does have a tendency to just scream and cry instead of use his words if things don't go his way.
It's all worked out well for us (so far) and the Language unit was shut down after the first term of the year DS started school, so I would have been gutted if I had sent him there!

he was very bad, could barely say anything and he was one of the youngest in the year too. no no bullying, turned out to be very popular but he has that kind of infectious personality where everyone he ever meets just likes him I think.

Have you thought about a split placement? Where the
Child can attend the mainstream, but once a week attend the special provision school.
