Hall School - has it changed since Mr Godwin became head?

Hi all,

DS has been offered a place for Y1 entry at the Hall for 2015. While this is fabulous, and we think he should be well suited to the school, DS is currently in a very nurturing Montessori environment, and wondered if any parents with boys currently at the Hall could shed light on some of the below:

  1. How pushy is the school? And how much homework do the boys bring back home in Yr 1?
  2. How competitive are the parents? Is Kumon maths etc the norm?
  3. Have things changed since Mr Godwin arrived? We loved meeting him at our parent meeting, and got the impression he was guiding the school down a less 'hothouse' route, but have no idea if that is a valid impression.

Any other advice very welcome. The Hall is clearly a fabulous school, but more than anything, we want DS to be at a school where he thrives and where his love for learning is encouraged.

Many thanks!

PM me and I can tell you what we know so far

Congratulations. I followed your previous school thread as we are considering the same 3 schools for 2016.

Thanks! I take it you've registered for HH? You can defer entry for 1 year, which we've done, so he's got a Y1 place there for 2015.

Also look into Northbridge House, as we've heard very good things about it.

If you don't mind me asking, how was the AH parent interview? What are they looking for? Like you, I am not tutoring but worried DS will be shy on the day of his assessment even though he is very bright.

sh77, have PMed you

Hi- congrats on the offer. Do you mind me asking when your offer later was dated? We have yet to hear back either way from the Hall (and am now thinking maybe didn't get an offer). Have any other readers received offers or non-offers?
Many thanks

Ps I know a few mums with boys at Hall, all v happy, all like the new head too

i haven't heard either - does this mean rejection? anyone?

radbabes · 28/05/2014 13:36

sauterelle- the letter was dated 23rd May, but I know that parents are to be told by early June, so perhaps your letter will be posted after half term next week?

Thanks! Hmm am guessing they make offers first... Do you have to reply by next week? Anyway congrats again. Everyone tells me that it all works out for the best in the end, so we'll see where my DS ends up, maybe will be somewhere else :) x

We have until June 12 to reply. It will work out for the best. Have you looked at Northbridge House? I know several children there, and they are all happy, well adjusted and bright.

Thanks, yes we have visited most schools in the area but as we want him to stay in his current Montessori for the Reception Year, we will get back in touch with other schools during the next academic year
