What's the problem with navy?

This is the second year in a row that I have had a problem finding navy schoolwear.

I have looked in shops in South Wales, North Wales and the north west of England, as well as the Next brochure.

You see acres of grey and black, and one rail of navy. I thought loads of schools had navy as their uniform colour?

I have looked in different branches of Asda, Tesco, Matalan, Primark, Next, M&S, BHS and other places I can't remember at the moment; no luck. Admittedly, I haven't tried the school uniform shop (or whatever it's called), but I object to paying ?15 for a pair of trousers for a 9 year old, just because they're navy, when I could get grey or black ones in Asda for ?3.50...

Has anyone else had this problem, or is it just me and the area I live in / areas my relatives live in?

It seems that whatever you need in your area they dont have. No green where I live, at least 4 green schools.

emsiewill · 29/08/2006 17:13

Lol! It's not like they've sold out through high demand for navy, they still have acres of every other colour, and no empty rails where the navy ones were. (no green though - pity, we could have done a swap).

Thanks Pamina, will try Mothercare and Adams, but just makes me so that I have to pay their prices (OK, I know they're not exactly really expensive, but more than Asda, Tesco et al)

Just been perusing M&S website, guess what? Loads of black / grey choice, only a couple of things in navy.

grrr ,

Yes, we have to have black shoes as well. Not too hard to find, but then finding ones that are black and fit the exacting demands of dd1 is a thankless and timeconsuming task.

MarsLady · 29/08/2006 18:16

Have you tried John Lewis?

fairydust · 29/08/2006 18:20

m&s had loads of navy in store and online in june.

julienetmum · 31/08/2006 22:02

If anyone is after navy pinafores I have several brand new Banner ones for sale I'll accept £5 inc postage each (worth around £15.)I bought them as a job lot with some grey ones I wanted.

The local primary school has a navy uniform but boys stil wear black trousers not navy with a navy sweatshirt whereas the girls wear either navy skirt or pinafore or black trousers.

Don't ask me why!!!s

Gingerbear · 31/08/2006 22:06

LOL at your new name Malory !

LIZS · 01/09/2006 21:59

Debenhams used to get store staff to do a survey of local school uniforms every so often so they could allocate more of the colours likely to be most in demand.

DumbledoresGirl · 01/09/2006 22:02

I have the same problem with finding navy trousers for boys. M&S round here do them for girls but not boys! However, you can order them from any M&S if you are prepared to go back in to collect them when they come in. After my first attempt to do this, I decided to buy direct from the school. They sell (at reasonable prices) excellent boys trousers and shorts. I keep meaning to note down the maker as I expect they could be ordered direct online...
