Would you do it with a sewing machine? I don't have one but could probably borrow one from a friend and I vaguely remember how to use one from school needlecraft lessons.

And iron-on, laundry stamp or tag-it tapes aren't an option as the school has specified particular woven ones in various sizes.

I'd do it by hand - a few every day.

Do it by hand. It wont take long you can just do a few stitches at each end.

Doing it with a machine will be a nightmare and won't be any quicker.

Just put something good on the TV and do a few every day.

think I'd pay someone else to do it

I use seen on tapes, but fold them in half in a sort of loop and sew them by the short end.

Alas, you can't use a sewing machine as it shows through. I quite like sewing them on and they do only take a few minutes each. 10 a night, and you'll be done in under 2 weeks

Uh-huh. 96. Just did the maths with the uniform list. It's boarding so there are socks and pants to label as well as towels and flannels and seemingly endless sports kit.

Perhaps I will treat myself to a box set of something and a bottle of gin.

Agree, more trouble than its worth on the machine. Tedious task nevertheless. My mum used to make me sew my own name tapes on but I don't recommend that option if you don't want your dc to hate you forever for it

sharpie pen on the label and on the inside of the neckband or waistband...so if the label is cut out, you still have the item named and therefore proof that the item belongs to your child.

Much quicker and still effective.

I'd throw them in the drawer and take out a laundry marker or sharpie, instead.

I do use a sewing machine! It's dead easy and quick once you are set up. The only pain is changing the thread for different things eg white for shirts, grey for trousers etc.

Don't they have a "matron and her ladies" to do that for you?

Ugh - the idea of getting ds to do some of them... He's a good boy but 8yos don't tend to stitch things very neatly.

Ooerrmissus apart from changing thread colour it must take less than a minute per label once you get going? Or am I being wildly optimistic?

I do think its sounds ridiculously old-fashioned - almost for the sake of it - of the school to specify that only sewn in labels are acceptable.

I buy stick-in labels for my children - think they're called "stikins". They don't need sewing or ironing, they survive the wash completely intact & they don't come out of the clothes. They also work in shoes, on pencil cases & so on.

Definitely sew by hand. Hopefully your child has a short name unlike mine And good luck with the socks. I hate doing those.

I went to boarding school at 11 and think the sewing on of all these name tapes is the least of your worries

At dds school even the boarders seem to have stuff that's only marked with a laundry pen. I can understand iron on not being an option as they won't last the school laundry

I have ballet tights & dance underwear to label too!
