Private senior school (13+) for maths-focused DS

DS good at maths, not so good at English.

He has a 13+ place at Hampton in London, but we're kind of hacked off with London house price lunacy, thinking of decamping to somewhere away from the madness where we could buy a cheaper house and also find a good academic day school that would suit his sort of maths nerd/aspergers-type needs.

Any suggestions for schools/areas to consider?

Is he year 6 with a 13+ offer based on a pretest, or year 8 needing a place this September?

KarmaSuitsya · 27/02/2014 00:07

He is in Y7 with a pretest offer from Y6.

RGS Guildford...just look at their next destinations especially maths and sciences

KarmaSuitsya · 27/02/2014 01:01

No I was thinking something significantly cheaper, property-wise. Birmingham, Bristol, I have no real idea at this point.

Not Guildford though, still too expensive.

King Edward's, Birmingham?

Manchester Grammar? (Cool city, cheap property...)

Magdalen College School, Oxford? (Though I doubt property would be very much cheaper, but a nice place to live.)

Think all of these have more or less stellar reputations.....

What about Warwick School if you are looking towards the Midlands?

meditrina · 27/02/2014 07:07

Are there any parts of the country you've always secretly hankered to live in?

NCISaddict · 27/02/2014 07:12

You don't have to live in Guildford to go to RGS, we live in Farnborough which is loads cheaper than Guildford.

WhoWasThatMaskedWoman · 27/02/2014 07:21

Warwick would make you handy for Warwick University (in Coventry I grant you) if you really wanted to plan ahead.

outtolunchagain · 27/02/2014 07:23

What about Suffolk, good choice if Independents, Ipswich School and Woodbridge both good for maths and science

mummytime · 27/02/2014 07:48

Where can you live for work?
This is the most crucial aspect. Then work out reasonable commuting distances for yourself and your son based on this.

There are a lot of good schools all over the country.

dellon · 27/02/2014 10:13

Lots of boys go into RGS by train from areas around

RnB · 27/02/2014 10:18

Lancing College are great with my friends son who has Asperger's. Reasonable property prices in Worthing and Shoreham

KarmaSuitsya · 27/02/2014 10:41

RGS not really an option, the 12+ test has just gone and we chose not to have DS sit it.

Is there anything down in the further reaches of Kent, Folkestone, say?

Or is it all grammar schools down there?

Work could literally be anywhere.

The Grammar School at Leeds, good for maths, nice place to live :)

TheBeautifulVisit · 27/02/2014 10:52

Lancing College are losing their headmaster this summer.
Bedford School.
St. John's Cardiff
Gresham's School Norfolk
St Christopher's Letchworth
Ipswich
Colchester

Ipswich and the surrounding villages are remarkably inexpensive considering London is only 1hr 15 away. My son is at Ipswich School and loves it for its maths/physics/music/sport focus.

inthename · 27/02/2014 15:13

Sounds like you need to narrow it down to an area (even if its just a county) day or boarding and at this stage if hes in Year 7, further narrow the list down to schools that don't pretest in Year 6/7 for Year 8. Presumably he's doing CE so you'll also need to check the predicted pass mark/level he is at with his current school against any other schools entrance criteria. At the moment you'd be best to look at the good schools guide or the independent schools website search facility as you can type in a county and it would give you a starting list.

St Lawrence College in Ramsgate? Very reasonable property in that area!

Perse, Cambridge?
