Maths tuition

How on earth do I find a decent maths teacher who can inspire my obstinate son into learning? I've googled maths tuition in my area and only a chap popped up with a comb over. This will not inspire him.

He finally let me read his report. It's pretty damming. He's 15 in year 10. We don't have too much time and I'm panicking.

He's completely switched off!

Whereabouts are you? My sister in law is a brilliant maths tutor .... But the likely good of you being nearby is minimal I'm guessing!

I know a good one in North Wilts.

It might be worth asking his maths teacher. Teachers know each other, and he/she may know someone who tutors. That's how my DDs friend's mother found her a tutor.

We have just started maths tuition with a brilliant 6th former. He's already done A Level Maths and is doing Extra A Level Maths prior to heading off to do a Maths degree. He is really cool and young and although DS hates Maths, he cannot wait for the next session. And it's only costing £10 per hour.

Ask at school - they will know someone or a young teacher may want to do it themselves. We got our maths teacher via a card in the newsagents (hers not ours) - a retired maths teacher who lives round the corner. A massive stroke of luck! Ask around as well - I'm sure you will find someone, maybe a gap year student?

I'm sure the school will come up with someone, but it has to be the right someone. He really needs a good male role model and young enough that ds can relate to him.

Sadly not on the south coast MrsExtra. He is pretty amazing but every sixth form Maths department must have one too! Ask around.

It's not likely that teachers at his school would be permitted to accept money from parents for giving extra help.

Ask his Maths teacher if there is a suitable "friend" (working at another school) who might be willing to do this. Try other teachers too.

I can recommend maths dr.. Online tuition so tutor doesn't have to be local to you. Search on mumsnet, they did a big sticky thread thing last month
