My laptop has broken so am having to replace. I thought that i would probably go for a tablet next.
Dd is about to start having to do her homework online-will she struggle with a tablet with it not having a keyboard?

Yes! But why on earth would an 8 year old need to do homework on a computer anyway?

You can get covers for tablets with integrated keyboards but they're not that easy for beginner typists to use

I know, I've heard of secondary schools doing it but not primary. Looks like I might have to go for another laptop then. Really wanted a tablet Hmm

If your dd is doing stuff like Learn Anywhere and Mathletics, I would go for a laptop - a lot of these sites aren't designed to work on a tablet and often simply aren't compatible. (The lack of keyboard is a different issue - the tablet has an onscreen keyboard so that at least could be worked around).

I've been looking at chrome books actually, they do look quite good.

I thought about a Chromebook for my ds but decided:

  • I wanted something that could run Office-like software (obv there is Google Drive and Sky Drive but ds has to use Excel and so on at school
  • something with a hard drive would mean he could watch some of his TV shows on it as well, without having to stream everything from cloud storage. Plus we aren't always connected to the internet.

Definitely worth a look, though.
