Best laptop for schoolwork - Year 8

Looking for a laptop for Year 8 DC. Don't want a Mac. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to look for?

In Y8, DS1 needed to be able to do the following:
Do a lot of typing and word processing, so I think a comfortable keyboard would be useful.
Access the internet for research and online homework (MyMaths, Cambridge Latin Course).
Produce a couple of powerpoint presentations.
Produce a few posters (Microsoft Publisher was adequate for his needs).

I would have thought any basic laptop with some office software installed would be fine.
If she'll need to take it to school (mine didn't) then it would need to be light enough to be portable and low-spec enough to be unattractive to thieves.

Thank you. Anyone with any brands I should look at. Realise this has nothing to do with Steiner schools so unlikely to be an interesting topic tonight.
