Dyslexia or late development

My son turned 7 in October and have been told by his teacher that he might be slightly dyslexic or just a late developer... Not sure what to think he reads quite well but his spelling is very phonetic still. How can I help him? Can you direct me to some websites that teaches what strategies can he use to ensure he does not loose confidence. He is good at spelling tests when he has 15 words but when he has 90 or something he can't really cope. I am also worried that he writes as little as possible to avoid making mistakes

Hi slinkysista I posted twice by mistake and the other post has few more replies. Let me know if you cannot find it. Will you get your son assessed or will you wait?

Hi Teo
My son is six so I'm thinking I'll wait until around Easter and if there's no real progress I'll get him assessed. I hope it's just that he's a late developer.
Good luck, I'm off to find the other thread:-)

The first thing you need to find out is if he is actually dyslexic. Then you can find the appropriate books.
You need to get the school to do an assessment. Then, if he is, try out the Beat Dyslexia series of books, with CD and also Toe by Toe reading programme. All the books are available on Amazon. It may be worth starting him on them before the assessment, which will take ages to get, unless you pay for it yourself.
Also check out Irlen syndrome website. This issue is not much known about but can affect reading.
Good luck!
