How are READING levels ASSESSED if using different reading schemes???

DS's school uses all types of books including the Oxford Reading Tree and many other ones I have never heard off.

At the end of the year when a child is assessed what scale do they use? DS was assessed today and I just wanted to know more about it before parents eve.

Thanks.

There are a variety of different tests that can be used. It isn't based on the books a child is reading. they tend to be lists of words, start easy, get harder sort of thing. Sorry to sound vague. The child reads until they get stuck. Number of words read correctly equates to Reading age. There is a clculation thay you do.

I gave them to kids during my primary TP

Most schools use a "reading age" test. The majority of these are simply a de-coding test - i.e. no comprehension is required, they just need to be able to read/pronounce correctly:
cat sam fun
...
evangelical philosophical etc!

It's a very crude test, but gives an approximate idea of their de-coding ability, and can be simply and quickly administered by an untrained person.

eg this one...not the one I used but it was similar

Well it did involve comprehension and he was assessed at level 23 (no idea what that means) and they mad a big deal of it and took him to the head for additional praise. It's funny cos I know he is a good reader but for most of the year he gets very little praise as his writing is slow to progress and as in his words 'that's all you do in school - write'.

I'm really pleased that he is so happy today.
