I had assumed they formed part of the ucas application - otherwise what's the point? Now I understand that they don't. Is this right? Disappointed as my DD achieved v high ums scores in all her A level choices and I had hoped this would be useful on some level.

They only really care about the GCSE grades. The actual UMS points would be more detail they can possibly cope with.

Some top university screen applications for very competitive courses on the number of As. That's about the only contribution that GCSEs make to their applications.
