I am left handed and failed misaerably trying to learn a right handed guitar. Didn't even know there was such a thing as a left handed guitar.

Coolmama · 19/06/2006 21:32

Am a lefty who learnt to play flamenco as a teenager - just learnt to play right-handed - that strange feeling that you get sometimes if you think you are doing something "upside down" will go very quickly - and is a million times easier than complicating things trying to learn to play left-handed IMO - have fun! i will have to see how he gets on, if he could play right handed it would be easier (and cheaper) but if he struggles will have to look at other options!

my brother is left handed and plays a right handed guitar upside down, like jimmy hendrix did. must be easier than playing right handed. but then playinh guitar at all is hard at the beginning.

serenity · 19/06/2006 21:47

According to DH Paul McCartney played a right handed bass lefthanded by restringing it upside down. If your DS can't get the hang of hid right handed guitar it might just be a cheaper option than buying a specialist one?

Tommy · 19/06/2006 21:50

I knew someone who played it upside down but I would think it's probably easier to restring it isn't it?

southeastastra · 19/06/2006 21:51

oh dear he wants me to re-string it!

no, because then you can never borrow your mate's guitar without restringing it. so db says

i've been reading that restringing could crack the bridge argh! still he seems to be in good company with left handed guitarists. will have to ponder this one!

Dh is a lefty & plays the electric guitar the right way round. That way its his stronger hand that does all the stuff like bending strings and all the twiddly solo stuff Grin. Hes just told me to mention that BB King & Mark Knopfler are both lefties who play the "normal" way.

Aero · 19/06/2006 23:16

My sister also plays the Hendrix way.
I'm left-handed too, but am inclined to pick up a RH guitar - I cna't really play more than a few chords, but can't imagine using my right hand to change chords.
